This certificate program focuses on helping instructors enhance student engagement using university-supported educational technology tools. Participants will explore practical strategies for integrating tools such as video creation tools, polling tools (e.g., Poll Everywhere), and selected Brightspace features into their courses. Through hands-on activities and examples, faculty will design learning experiences that promote active participation, timely feedback, and meaningful interaction in both online and in-person environments.

Rates of depression and anxiety among college-age students have risen sharply, and educators are caught between competing instincts: do students need more support, or have we protected them too much from difficulty? Psychologist and professor Sarah Rose Cavanagh proposes a framework she calls “compassionate challenge”: create environments of genuine support first, then guide students into productive difficulty. Students are far more capable of facing hard things when they feel genuinely supported. This FLC will be a practical reframe, connecting teaching philosophy, classroom climate, and course design to student wellbeing in concrete ways. The book is a reflective, research-informed conversation about what it means to both support and stretch the students in front of us.

Faculty navigate complex legal issues every day, often without realizing it. Join us for a semester-long book group on Navigating Choppy Waters: Legal Issues College Faculty Need to Know with author Kent Kauffman, Associate Professor of Business Law. Over four interactive sessions, we will engage in small-group discussions and facilitated Q&A focusing on key themes from the book. Participants will gain critical insights and deepen their understanding of legal issues in higher education, while Kent provides expert guidance to help unpack these issues.

CELT’s Foundations of Collegiate Teaching: A GTA certificate is specifically designed to support and develop graduate students with an interest in developing teaching skills. This certificate helps international faculty translate their teaching expertise into the U.S. higher education context while building lasting professional community at PFW. The program combines a six-part workshop series (covering U.S. academic culture and expectations, building belonging, cross-cultural classroom communication, teaching across cultures, understanding today's Gen Z students, and mentoring for long-term success) with ongoing drop-in consultations for one-on-one support. Faculty leave with practical classroom strategies, stronger relationships with students and colleagues, and a network of support that carries them through their careers at PFW.

This certificate provides a series of workshops aimed at empowering educators with effective strategies to create an engaging learning environment for our PFW students.
