Major: Human Services

Concentration: Family, Diversity

Biography

Ivonne Ruiz graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the Human Services program. The concentrations she focused on were family and diversity, as they were what she was interested in when she started the major. In the program, she was given the opportunity to complete two internships in two different organizations to expand her knowledge and experience in the field. Through both internships, she was able to explore different sides of the human services field and create a picture of the work she wanted to do after graduating.

At the start of the program, she was uncertain if it was the right path for her, but as the years passed and she met new people, her future started to take form. She was deeply interested in advocating and interpreting. During her internship, she was able to learn more about advocacy and the need for it in the community. Because Ivonne came from a Spanish-speaking household, she was familiar with how interpreting worked, but her internship experience made this interest even stronger. Seeing the lack of interpreters in many languages and observing how many were unable to properly relay a client’s message to the other party made it hard to ignore the growing need for representation. At the time, she was unsure of what would happen in the future, but she hoped to achieve all her goals.

Outside of her school life, she loved taking time for herself and working on her self-care. She liked to watch her favorite shows and read whenever she could, as she believed that breaks were important to help prevent burnout later in her career. While her future felt uncertain because she was unsure of her next steps—whether to further her education or begin working immediately—she wanted to be able to help as much as she could no matter where she ended up. Recognizing that everyone faces uncertain futures, she simply wanted to live her life to the fullest, with no regrets.

Jack Oberley was a multifaceted musician from Fort Wayne, Indiana. In his time at Purdue University Fort Wayne, he accomplished much—from musical pursuits to academic pursuits. As a vocalist, Jack sang in six operas, achieved third place in the Indiana Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing voice competition, completed two recitals under the guidance of Dr. William Sauerland, and performed a variety of other solo and small ensemble roles in different settings. As a student, Jack spent his honors career working to deepen his understanding of music, particularly with respect to composition and secondary media. Projects to this end involved exploring racial stereotyping in music and media, transcribing a medieval chant and composing in historical forms based off it, studying Romantic-era operatic compositional techniques, analyzing the music of the modern horror film using Ari Aster’s Midsommar as a case study and applying discoveries to his own score for a horror short film, and researching the field of ludomusicology to teach himself about composing scores for video games.

While making these strides as a singer and scholar, Jack furthered his career and worked his way through university. He assisted and served his fellow students both as a music tutor—teaching piano, sight singing, and music theory—and as a resident assistant with PFW housing—overseeing over 80 students at an off-campus housing site, organizing events, providing information, ensuring safety, and mediating conflict. Jack also worked at two different high schools providing piano accompaniment for their show choirs, at First Wayne Street United Methodist Church as a choral scholar, and as a freelance musician gigging at places such as the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory and in fellow students' recording studio sessions. Biography

From an early age, a focus on education defined their academic trajectory. Early engagement with pre-kindergarten learning books and independent reading fostered strong literacy skills.

For primary education, they attended a Lutheran school affiliated with their church, despite initial preferences for a public school setting. This environment provided a foundation in Christian ethics and long-term social connections. Growing up in southeast Fort Wayne, a diverse community, they were exposed to multiple cultural perspectives, which contributed to a broader understanding of social dynamics.

The transition to high school presented a different experience. While remaining in a Lutheran institution, the student body was more homogenous, with a strong conservative presence. Social structures were rigid, making extracurricular participation difficult without prior associations. Art classes became an outlet for creative expression and engagement.

The events of 2020, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the murder of George Floyd, and the presidential election, further influenced their sociopolitical perspective. Institutional responses to the Black Lives Matter movement were dismissive, with restrictions on political expression selectively enforced. A social justice club was formed to promote cultural inclusivity, though administrative resistance limited its impact. Broader policies within the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, particularly opposition to Critical Race Theory, reflected institutional reluctance to address structural inequalities.

Academic coursework emphasized critical analysis. Literature studies introduced themes of class disparity and anti-consumerism. Government and theological ethics classes highlighted contradictions between doctrine and institutional practices. Exposure to economic inequality through coursework and media, such as Robert Reich’s "Inequality for All," led to further inquiry into alternative economic systems. These experiences fostered a commitment to examining systemic structures and advocating for informed, critical perspectives on social and political issues.

Biography

Eleemosynary, by Lee Blessing, was a realized production of the Purdue Fort Wayne Department of Theatre in the Fall Semester of 2022. Directed by Professor Jeffrey Casazza, the play followed the lives of three generations of Westbrook women: Dorothea, Artie, and Echo. The staging transported audience members through the memories of these women, revealing the distinct characteristics and underlying threads that bound them together.

The primary challenge for the costume design was creating distinct visual identities for each character while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. A particularly poignant element was the construction of the 1958 wings, crafted by the character Dorothea. The design had to balance durability and ease of movement with a "homemade" appearance—a problem successfully resolved through a rigorous design process.

This process began with a deep analysis of the script and the development of a research bible. While the play was set in the 1980s, the wings were inspired by more contemporary sources. The designer presented various sketches during production meetings involving the director, production coordinator, and the scenic, costume, and lighting designers. This collaborative environment ensured that potential issues were resolved before the final renderings were created and the budget was established.

Under the direction of Clinical Assistant Professor Jeanne Pendleton, the costume shop brought the vision to life. While most pieces were pulled from existing stock or purchased and altered, Dorothea’s costume and the specialized wings were built entirely from scratch by students and the shop supervisor. The wings were constructed like a quilt, ensuring they remained lightweight and simple for the actress to wear.

Ultimately, color and silhouette became major assets in defining the characters. Dorothea’s flowing garments highlighted her playful spirit, Artie’s structured suit revealed her distant nature, and Echo’s look served as a middle ground between the two. The final designs contrasted the scenic elements without pulling focus, allowing the performers to feel confident and move without restriction. As Echo noted that words gave her the ability to fly, the costume design provided the designers the same opportunity to find their voice.

Biography

Kakathi Tummala was born and raised in India, where she completed high school and passed the necessary examinations to enter medical college. During a vacation to the United States following the 12th grade, she decided she wanted to pursue her higher education in America.

This decision was met with significant resistance from her family and peers, as it meant moving 8,792 miles away from home to a country where she would be doubting what many considered a prestigious and secure career path. To Kakathi, however, the United States represented an opportunity to explore diverse professional interests that were not as easily accessible in her home country.

After four years of exploration, Kakathi reached a definitive conclusion and planned to apply to medical school. While others suggested those years were spent simply to return to her original starting point, Kakathi believed the time was invaluable; she was now choosing the medical profession with her whole heart rather than out of obligation. Through her journey, she learned that it was acceptable to be unsure and to take the time necessary to find one’s true purpose, rather than simply following the expectations of others.
