PFW’s Distinguished Lecturer will show how to make the Perfect poppy-seed bagel
FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Each fall semester, the College of Arts and Sciences at Purdue University Fort Wayne brings a world-class scholar from outside the university to showcase his or her expertise as part of the College’s Distinguished Lecture Series. Each spring semester, a scholar from within their own exceptional faculty is featured.
On Thursday, October 24, Edward B. Saff, professor of mathematics and director of the Center for Constructive Approximation at Vanderbilt University, will present “From Analog to Digital or How to Make the ‘Perfect’ Poppy-Seed Bagel” at noon in the Classic Ballroom in Walb Student Union.
Moving from analog to digital is a common occurrence—think of scanning a photograph to a computer screen or transferring information from a record to a CD. Saff will discuss how minimal-energy techniques can be used to digitize surfaces in any dimension, a process relevant to a variety of scientific contexts. As a whimsical example of digitization, Saff will demonstrate how to make the “perfect” poppy-seed bagel.
The lecture, which is cosponsored by Purdue Fort Wayne’s Department of Mathematical Sciences, is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
