PFW to offer Speech-Language Pathology master’s degree

FORT WAYNE, IN—Prospective students seeking an advanced degree at Purdue University Fort Wayne will soon have a new option. The creation of a master’s program in Speech-Language Pathology was approved today by the Purdue University Board of Trustees.

“This is huge for our program,” said Stacy Betz, associate professor and chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. “Students who want to practice speech-language pathology are required to have a master’s degree. Now they will have the opportunity to pursue that degree right here at Purdue Fort Wayne.”

This will be the first graduate program offered by the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the College of Arts and Sciences.

“We continue to work closely with business and industry to offer degrees that meet the needs of society, the workforce, and our students,” said Purdue Fort Wayne Chancellor Ron Elsenbaumer. “The approval today for the creation of this program is one more step in that direction.”

The program now has to be approved by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Indiana Department of Education.

“We are going to be able to fill an important need,” said Betz. “Due to the lack of programs in the area, there has been strong competition by Communication Sciences and Disorders students to get into graduate programs. Now, they will have that opportunity with our world-class faculty right here in Fort Wayne.”
