United Way Day of Caring strengthens connections between the university and our community

Eight university volunteers recently put the institution’s commitment to community engagement into action by participating in the United Way Day of Caring at the Veterans National Memorial Shrine and Museum on O’Day Road.

Throughout the day, the team painted, pulled weeds, moved furniture, cleaned the museum and monuments, and completed other projects around the facility. Their efforts helped maintain a welcoming space where visitors can learn about the service and sacrifices of veterans.

The Veterans National Memorial Shrine and Museum holds an important place in the community by preserving veterans’ stories and providing a space for remembrance, reflection, and education. Supporting the facility was a meaningful way for university volunteers to demonstrate their appreciation while assisting an organization with an important public mission.

The impact of the Day of Caring extended beyond the work completed. Volunteer service gives participants an opportunity to learn more about local organizations, understand community needs, and form relationships with the people working to make the region stronger.

Community engagement is an important pillar of the university. Our responsibility does not end at the boundaries of campus. As faculty, staff, and students who live, work, and learn in this region, we have a shared duty to contribute to the well-being of the community around us.

Partnerships with organizations such as United Way connect the university with meaningful opportunities to serve. They also help the institution better understand local priorities and identify ways its people, knowledge, and resources can support the region.

Community service contributes to the university’s educational mission as well. Students gain experiences that complement classroom learning and develop a greater understanding of civic responsibility. Faculty and staff bring valuable knowledge, experience, and leadership to these partnerships while demonstrating that service is a lifelong commitment.

The Day of Caring is one example of how the university can build lasting community connections. By working alongside local organizations and responding to their needs, volunteers demonstrate that the university is committed to being an active and dependable community partner.

The university will continue seeking opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to become more involved throughout the region. This includes strengthening relationships with organizations already doing important work and encouraging members of the campus community to share their time, talents, and expertise.

The university extends its appreciation to the eight volunteers who contributed their time and energy at the Veterans National Memorial Shrine and Museum. Their work reflects the spirit of service we hope to continue growing across campus.
