Purdue Fort Wayne selected for $10,000 grant to help students facing financial emergencies

PATH Scholarship funding will complement existing student emergency assistance

Purdue University Fort Wayne has been selected to receive a $10,000 grant through the Ellucian Foundation’s 2026 PATH Scholarship program to help students facing financial hardship remain enrolled and continue working toward their educational goals.

The funding will work alongside PFW’s Zielinski Student Emergency Fund, expanding the university’s ability to assist students whose financial circumstances could interrupt their studies. Individual awards of up to $2,500 can provide targeted assistance for immediate needs, supplementing other available grant support.

“An unexpected expense can create a significant obstacle for a student who is working hard to complete a degree,” said Karen Louis, assistant director of compliance and scholarships in PFW’s Office of Financial Aid. “Even a relatively small amount of assistance can help address an immediate need and allow a student to stay focused on school. This funding gives us another resource to help students continue their education.”

The PATH Scholarship program, which stands for Progress, Accomplishment, Thriving, Hope, provides grants to colleges and universities to support students experiencing financial distress. The funding is used entirely for student support and does not replace other grant assistance.

Eligible recipients must be enrolled at Purdue Fort Wayne at least half-time, pursuing a degree or certificate and in good academic standing. Students dually enrolled in high school and college are not eligible. The funding supports students during the fall 2026 semester.

PFW’s existing Zielinski Student Emergency Fund provides assistance to currently enrolled, degree-seeking students experiencing an accident, illness, financial hardship or another circumstance that may jeopardize their academic success. The additional PATH funding complements that support by providing another source of assistance when financial challenges threaten a student’s ability to continue.

Emergency assistance is one part of Purdue Fort Wayne’s broader commitment to helping students and families make college more affordable. The university’s financial aid professionals help families understand their options, identify available scholarships and grants, and make informed decisions about paying for college while minimizing the need to borrow. The Office of Financial Aid also offers personalized assistance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, along with in-person and virtual appointments.
