Purdue Fort Wayne celebrates opening of W. Paul Wolf Field

Purdue University Fort Wayne today celebrated the opening of W. Paul Wolf Field, a new athletic space designed to support the university’s expanding club sports program and strengthen the student experience.

University leaders, students, and community members gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony recognizing longtime university supporter W. Paul Wolf, whose generous gift helped make the field and continued growth of club sports possible.

Located near Dean Drive and Parking Garage 3 on the north side of campus, W. Paul Wolf Field will serve as a primary competition site for club football, lacrosse, soccer, and flag football. The facility features a new scoreboard, benches, and bleachers, creating an enhanced game-day environment for student-athletes and spectators.

“We are incredibly grateful to Mr. Wolf for his continued generosity and belief in Purdue Fort Wayne,” said Ron Elsenbaumer, chancellor at Purdue Fort Wayne. “His support allows us to elevate the student experience in meaningful ways by providing our students with high-quality facilities, resources, and a sense of pride as they represent Purdue Fort Wayne. This investment will have a lasting impact on our campus community.”

Purdue Fort Wayne announced the expansion of its club sports program earlier this year in response to strong interest from current and prospective students. Nearly 400 students completed the university’s recruitment form during the program’s development, demonstrating significant demand for additional opportunities to compete, connect, and become involved on campus.

The university now offers as many as 15 club sports. The expanded lineup includes men’s hockey, men’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, tackle football, women’s flag football, men’s and women’s rugby, coed running, men’s and women’s volleyball, and disc golf. These teams join the university’s existing men’s basketball, esports, and dance programs.

“Students have told us they want more opportunities to compete, build relationships and find their community at Purdue Fort Wayne,” Elsenbaumer said. “W. Paul Wolf Field gives our club sports teams a place to call home while creating new ways for the entire campus community to come together.”

Wolf’s gift also supported new uniforms for the club sports program, helping establish a unified identity for students representing Purdue Fort Wayne in regional competition.

Club sports are managed by Campus Recreation and supported by a student-led club sports council. Teams compete regionally through established leagues and national organizations, providing structured competition and opportunities for postseason play.
