Unifying education and research.
The systems engineering lab at Purdue Fort Wayne provides educational and research facilities for students and industry. Funding for these facilities was provided, in part, by the Lilly Endowment via the Northeast Indiana Talent Initiative.
The function of the systems engineering laboratories has been separated into two innovative facilities. The Enterprise Design and Leadership Lab focuses on the design and simulation of product, manufacturing, and enterprise systems. The center is actively engaged in model-based systems engineering research and development with SysML and GENESYS software.
Enterprise Design and Leadership Lab
Finding a common vision.
The Enterprise Design and Leadership Lab is located in the Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science Building, Room 235. The lab provides an environment dedicated to the diagnosis and design of enterprise systems. Because the success of complex enterprise systems often hinges on the leadership of people, the lab is designed to unite people to a common vision of the enterprise system. A common vision is only possible with open and extensive communication.
To promote this communication, the lab employs over 40 whiteboards to allow participants to brainstorm and share their ideas. Even when using computers, wireless projection means that anyone can share what they are working on. Since the lab is set up for video conferencing, that includes participants who may be a world away.
The lab’s modular layout can be changed to accommodate many different educational and instructional needs, including classes, workshops, seminars, conferences, and business meetings. The lab can also be used for physical simulation of work and process flow. And no engineering lab would be complete without a host of the latest software packages.
In addition, the Enterprise Design and Leadership lab supports the research and application of systems engineering, enabling researchers and students to model and develop an understanding of the functional requirements of system designs.
The lab is designed to provide the following capabilities:
- Collaborate with industry and researchers in a professional learning environment
- Manage, trace, and communicate systems requirements using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) industry tools with GENESYS and MagicDraw
- Model and simulate a broad range of systems, from mathematics-based models in MATLAB to visualization with additive manufacturing with CAD/CAM to system-level models in SysML
- Simplify research and collaboration with remote access to software tools
