News Release

Amy Tan News Conference November 14

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Amy Tan, the second speaker in the 2018–19 Omnibus Lecture Series season, will meet with members of the media on Wednesday, November 14, beginning at 4 p.m. in Kettler Hall, Room 154.

Tan will present her lecture, An Evening with Amy Tan, that evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Auer Performance Hall, located in the Rhinehart Music Center on the Purdue University Fort Wayne campus.

Born in the US to immigrant parents from China, Amy Tan rejected her mother’s expectations that she become a doctor and concert pianist, choosing to write fiction instead. Six of her novels, including The Joy Luck Club and The Kitchen God’s Wife, became New York Times bestsellers.

Her other works include a memoir, two children’s books, and numerous articles for The New Yorker, Harper’s Bazaar, National Geographic, and other magazines. Her writing appears in 35 languages around the world.

Tan has lectured internationally at universities, delivered a TED talk, spoken at the White House, appeared on Sesame Street, and played in a literary garage band with Stephen King, Dave Barry, and Scott Turow to raise money for literacy programs.

Kettler Hall is located on the south side of campus. Parking is available in Lots 4, 5, and 6, or Parking Garage 1, all located on the south side of campus.

The English-Bonter-Mitchell Foundation has been the Omnibus Lecture Series sponsor since 1995. Media sponsors for the 2018–19 series are WANE TV NewsChannel 15, and 89.1 WBOI News and Diverse Music
