Allen County group travels to Statehouse to join redistricting protest
The Indiana House of Representatives returned to session a month ahead of schedule on Monday, gathering to consider mid-decade redistricting.
The lawmakers were greeted by hundreds of protesters, including about 20 from Allen County.
A group called Indiana Conservation Voters chartered a bus to transport the local protesters to the Statehouse. “What we want to say is redistricting shouldn’t be an option,” Jim Carpenter told 21Alive News while on a Zoom call from the protest. “They’re trying to push forward the Trump agenda which is not what the Indiana voters are in favor of.”
Purdue Fort Wayne Professor Michael Wolf says the new map would be a drastic change from the current one in place.
“It is noteworthy that we’re really affecting the representation in the US Congress,” he said. “The maps haven’t been this drastically changed going back 25 years. They’ve been pretty consistent. This is a considerable change.”
