Sweetgum
Description
The sweetgum is primarily a southern species, with five-lobed star-shaped leaves. Its seed heads are a distinctive horny sphere. Its fall color is brilliant and multicolored. Its branches develop corky ridges. The sap has a sweet taste and gummy consistency. Sweetgum is often a pioneer species in abandoned fields, especially in the south.
