Sassafras
Description
A vigorous pioneer species on abandoned farm fields that can sprout from underground runners and roots. It is intolerant of shade. Sassafras is an aromatic tree with three different leaf shapes: an unlobed oval, mitten shaped, and three lobed. Bark of the root contains an oil, which has been used for tea and root beer. Fall color is excellent, from gold through orange and bright red.
