A large shrub or small tree in the citrus family, the hoptree is often multistemmed. Wafer-like seeds remain on the tree into winter. Generally found in the shady understory of moist woodlands, it is a primary food source for the caterpillar stage of Indiana's giant swallowtail butterflies.
