Hackberry
Description
Hackberry bark has characteristic corky, irregular, worm-like ridges. Hackberry frequently grows witches’ brooms, or broom-like clusters of abnormal stem growth, which are the plant’s response to mites and fungal infections. Its fall-ripening rounded fruit is dark red to purple, and relished by birds.
