William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew: The March for the Vote
Williams Theatre
The year is 1919 and, amidst suffrage marches in Chicago, a women's social club convenes to rehearse their production of The Taming of the Shrew. In the classic play, suitors compete for the hand of the demure Bianca, but her father decrees that her fiery and tempestuous sister Katherine must wed first. Brave Petruchio accepts the challenge, and so begins a legendary battle of wits. When dress rehearsal commences, the club members--some Suffragist, some reactionary, some apolitical--re-examine Shakespeare's story and their own status as women in a rapidly changing society. This production reimagines Shakespeare’s beloved comedy with an all-female cast. Rated G.
