Sex-Based Discrimination and Harassment

Office for Civil Rights Compliance

What it is.

Discrimination is the illegal differentiation of people based on group membership; whereas harassment is defined as conduct towards another person or identifiable group of persons that is so severe, pervasive, or objectively offensive that it causes the following:

  • Creation of an intimidating or hostile educational environment, work environment, or environment for participation in a university program or activity;
  • Unreasonable interference with a person’s educational environment, work environment, or environment for participation in a university program or activity; or
  • Unreasonable affect on a person’s educational or work opportunities or participation in a university program or activity.

Sex-based discrimination or harassment will not be tolerated. According to our Equal Opportunity and Equal Access Policy (III.C.2), the university “does not condone and will not tolerate discrimination against any individual on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin or ancestry, genetic information, disability, status as a veteran, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.”
