Celebrated for his “beautiful voice and singing with great depth of feeling,” baritone, Dr. Matthew Giallongo has established himself equally at home on the operatic stage as well as the concert stage. He has been seen in performances across the country including Papageno (Die Zauberflote), Nardo (La finta giardiniera), Belcore (L’elisir d’amore), Picasso (After Life), Silvio (I pagliacci) with the Portsmouth Symphony, and most recently as Elder McLean (Susanna) with Opera Fort Collins.
On the recital stage Dr. Giallongo has a great passion for contemporary American and 20th century French music. He has been fortunate to work with many living composers and such as Libby Larsen, William Bolcom, and Lori Laitman, Kile Smith, and Tom Cipullo. He has a particular interest in the music of the later. Dr. Giallongo’s scholarly pursuits focus on comparative vocal pedagogy trying to bring clarity to the methods in French vocal pedagogy during the turn of the 20th century. He has recently finished a translation of Jules Lefort’s Methode de chant. He is a sought-after guest lecturer on the subject.
Dr. Giallongo joins the faculty at Purdue University Fort Wayne as assistant professor and the Director of Vocal Studies in the Fall of 2023. He previously served on the faculties of Eastern New Mexico University, Louisiana Tech University, Grambling State University, Colorado State University-Pueblo, and as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Cincinnati – College-Conservatory of Music. He has served on the summer program faculties of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, as head of the voice department at Camp Encore/Coda, and still serves as head music director for the North Shore Children’s Theatre. His student successes include placement at NATS auditions, TMEA All State Choir, summer stock productions, and equity performance contracts. His students have been accepted into programs at Ithaca College, Rider University, The Hartt School of Music, Emerson College, the University of North Texas, Colorado State University, Hochschule für Kunst Bremen, and Hochschule für Musik und Theater Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Leipzig.
Matthew holds a B.M. in Vocal Performance from Gettysburg College, an M.M. in Vocal Performance from Temple University, an M.M. in Vocal Pedagogy from Colorado State University, post graduate work at the University of North Texas, and a D.M.A from the University of Cincinnati – College-Conservatory of Music where he was a student of William McGraw.
