    FALL 2023

    • Pedagogoy Unlocked: Building Fundamentals for Lasting Educational Impact

      Time: Monday, August 14, 2023, 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

      This workshop is for Graduate Teaching Assistants only.

      Most enter the graduate teaching experience with a desire to impact the next generation of learners. What may be lacking in knowledge is compensated with passion and drive. Impacting the next generation academically has a great deal to do with developing pedagogy. This pedagogy is unlocked by many small, yet vitally important, initial steps when beginning a semester. This workshop is devoted to sharing these important first steps to maximize your academic impact.

       

    • Jumpstart 2023

      Time: Wednesday, August 16, 2023, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. 

      This workshop is only open to instructors new to Purdue University Fort Wayne.

      Jumpstart is a hands-on workshop designed to help instructors prepare for their first week of classes. We will cover university-supported teaching technologies, preparing accessible learner-centered syllabi, effective use of Brightspace to support student learning, and faculty teaching services available. Consultants will be available during work periods to answer questions and help instructors build their course content in Brightspace.  

    • Poll Everywhere Presenters Training

      Time: Friday, August 25, 2023, 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. 

      During this one-hour session, the Poll Everywhere Customer Success Manager, Eric Stewart, will explain types of Poll Everywhere activities and demonstrate how to create different activities to engage students in the teaching and learning process. The PFW Ed Tech team representatives will be present to answer Brightspace integration-related questions.

    • Building Rapport to Help Engage your Classroom

      Time: Monday, August 28, 2023,  10:00 am - 11:00 am

      This workshop is for Graduate Teaching Assistants only.

      Instructor rapport is paramount to building an engaging classroom environment. This workshop will explore the foundations of rapport and strategies for increasing instructor rapport with students. This workshop will be uniquely tailored for the graduate student and her/his classroom.

    • Who is a Mastodon: Getting to know and communicating with our students

      Time: Wednesday, August 30, 2023, 11:00 pm - 12:00 pm

      Without students, we have no teaching. Understanding our students is paramount to enhancing the teaching and learning environment. In this workshop we will learn more about our students; who they are, their preferences and expectations regarding their educational experience.

    • Set Up Your Gradebook in Brightspace

      Time: Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM

      During this session, faculty will learn how to set up their Gradebook in Brightspace. Learn about the major setting differences between Points and Weighted Grades and discuss the pedagogical considerations. A variety of tips will be shared.

    • Introduction to AI-powered Learning Tools in Higher Education

      Time: Thursday, September 7, 2023, 9:00 am - 10:00 am

      In this session, participants will explore different types of AI-Powered learning tools in Higher Education. This session focuses on the tools our students have easy access to with no or little cost. At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

      1. Identify primary features of AI-Powered learning tools easily accessible to our students
      2. Identify the limitations of each tool regarding student learning
      3. Identify the potential impact on teaching and learning

    • Peer Review Training

      Time: Friday, September 8, 2023 , 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

      In this 2-hour synchronous workshop, the Peer Review Team will model a 3-step, evidence-based process for peer reviews of teaching. Attendees will learn strategies for conducting effective peer reviews and have opportunities to apply what they've learned.

       

    • Brightspace New Quiz Creation Experience Workshop

      Time: Monday, September 11, 2023 at 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM

      Earlier this year, we introduced you to the new look for the Quizzes tool in Brightspace, which streamlines the process for instructors to create quizzes. Join us as we dive into using the Quizzes tool, its' new settings, and answer questions from participants.

    • Identifying and Supporting Struggling Students

      Time: Monday, September 11, 2023, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

      Retention and student success are part of the mission of our university. In this presentation we will review Brightspace tools that you can use to effectively identify at-risk students and ways to easily contact them. We will also present different types of interventions and resources available on campus to help those students.

    • Engaging Silent Learners: Techniques for Encouraging Student Participation

      Time: Wednesday, September 20, 2023, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm, (register here)

      We often lean heavily on students who readily participate in our classrooms. At times, this participation (or lack thereof) can influence our perspective of a student's ability and or engagement in the educational process. In this workshop we will explore why students may or may not readily participate and discuss strategies for engaging more students.

    • Surviving The GTA Experience

      Time: Monday, September 25, 2023, 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm, (register here)

      This workshop is for Graduate Teaching Assistants only.

      Holding a teaching assistantship at PFW brings many opportunities and challenges. Often, we wish we could ask someone who has "walked in our shoes." This workshop is devoted to doing just that. We will be gathering wisdom from second-year GTA's using a panel format. Veteran GTA's will be asked a series of questions regarding their experiences teaching while being a also being student themselves.

    • Will ChatGPT Pass My Assignments and Tests? [Session 1]

      Time: Thursday, September 28, 2023, 9:00 am - 10:00 am, (register here)

      This session is specifically designed for courses in which writing assignments are used to assess student learning. In this session, participants are invited to explore the capability of ChatGPT to complete assignments and tests in their courses. Based on the findings, participants will discuss activity and assessment design implications.

    • Amplifying Connection: Empowering Students by Cultivating Self-Efficacy

      Time: Wednesday, October 4, 2023, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm, (register here)

      This workshop will seek to explore the four major sources of self-efficacy; mastery experiences, social modeling, social persuasion, and psychological responses. Those attending will have the opportunity to consider their own assignments and engagement and identify two or three opportunities to impact student self-efficacy.

    • Enhance Students' Writing Skills with AI-Powered Tools

      AI-powered tools provide a unique opportunity to help students become better writers.   Join this session to discuss and explore different ways to embrace AI-powered tools to enhance students’ writing skills.

    • Using Poll Everywhere for Student Engagement and Attendance

      During this one-hour session, participants will learn the basics of Poll Everywhere. Example activities will be shared for engaging students and attendance tracking.

    • Beginning with the End in Mind: Effective Lesson Planning

      This workshop is for Graduate Teaching Assistants only.

      Whether a seasoned instructor or new to teaching, reflective instruction is a cornerstone to creating a healthy learning environment in our classrooms. In this workshop we will discuss the pillars of reflection and practical strategies for engaging in the reflective process.

    • Creating Teaching Presence for Student Success

      Teaching presence is essential for building community and promoting student success in online and face to face classes. In this session, we’ll explore strategies that instructors can start using now to create teaching presence in their own classrooms.

    • Cultivate a Community of Motivated Students through Team-Based Learning.

      Time: Friday, November 10, 2023, 10:00 am - 11:30 pm (register here)

      Team-Based Learning (TBL) promotes student motivation through collaboration, transferring the responsibility of learning from the teacher to the students. In TBL, students are organized into small groups working together on real-world problems or case studies that require them to apply course concepts and theories. The main challenge is how to build your course around projects and team activities? I have applied TBL to one of my courses and will share my experience with this transformational process. Participants will “learn-by-doing” as they engage in real TBL exercises and explore the steps needed to structure a TBL course.

    • Brightspace Course Organization and Navigation

      In this session we will use simple strategies, Brightspace tools, and CELT course templates to organize your online course content for easy navigation and student success.

    • Who Really Belongs in Grad School

      This workshop is for Graduate Teaching Assistants only.

      The Imposter Phenomenon is often prevalent in the university environment. In this hands-on workshop, participants will have the opportunity to self-assess and explore how they engage with the imposter phenomenon and strategies for managing its influence.

    SPRING 2024

    • Managing Student Empathy, Support, and Well-Being

      The Systematic Approach for Adapting the Learning Environment (SAALE) Model (Wood, 2006) is a problem solving approach. According to the SAALE Model, learning occurs when an instructor knows students' present level of performance, recognizes mismatches between how students learn and class learning environments, and adapts classroom learning environments accordingly. Participants will identify their level of preparedness and/or performance and exchange wisdom and practical strategies for better matching learning environments with student performance.

    • Affirming Your Teacher Identify while Enhancing Your Teaching Practice

      This workshop is for Graduate Teaching Assistants only.

      The college classroom includes much more than just academic content. It often includes a mix of student and instructor backgrounds, expectations, and desires. We teach best when we understand who we are as an instructor and blend these elements with the material and students we teach. This workshop will be a hands-on opportunity to engage in this exploration of blending instructor identity and content in the college classroom. This workshop will be uniquely tailored to the graduate teacher and his/her classroom.

    • Leverage AI-powered Tools to Support Student Learning

      AI capabilities are increasing at an unexpectedly fast rate. In addition to challenges related to academic integrity, AI-Powered tools also offer new opportunities to support student learning. Join this session to explore these opportunities, discuss class policies, and adapt teaching strategies to leverage AI tools.

    • Navigating Power-Dynamics in the Student-Instructor Relationship

      Whether we like it or not, power dynamics impact our classrooms. Titles, roles, attitude, and demeanor all contribute to the classroom mix of power. How we engage with this power impacts our learning environment. In this workshop we will explore the seven types of power: legitimate, coercive, reward, expert, referent, information, and connection (French and Raven, 1959), how this power is derived and the impact it may have in our classroom.

    • Engaging Diverse Classrooms

      The collegiate classroom creates a beautiful opportunity to engage diverse people and perspectives.     • Making Brightspace Assessment Tools Work for You

      Join this session to explore your options for creating, delivering, collecting, and grading assignments in Brightspace. We will discuss different ways to use three Brightspace tools (Assignments, Discussions, and Quizzes) and use the demo student tool to see the students' experience.

    • Transforming Classroom Challenges: Practical Approaches for Positive Change

      Classroom challenges impact the operation of our classroom. They either impact our ability to teach or a student's ability to learn... or maybe both. If these challenges are too many and too often, it may even impact our passion for teaching. In this workshop we will explore the interpretation of challenges, options for avoiding, and ways to handle challenges in a constructive manner.

    • Use Classroom Action Research to Assess and Inform Your AI-Empowered Teaching

      Classroom Action Research (CAR) is a systematic inquiry used by instructors to discover what works best in their own classroom situation, thus allowing informed decisions about teaching (Mettetal, 2003). This workshop focuses on applying CAR principles to your evolving teaching practices in the AI-powered age. In this session, participants will develop a draft research plan aimed at a specific aspect of their AI-empowered teaching.
