Purdue Fort Wayne and Michigan community college initiate student transfer agreement

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Purdue University Fort Wayne and Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan, recently signed an agreement allowing Washtenaw students to transfer their Associate of Applied Science degree toward a Bachelor of Applied Science degree from Purdue Fort Wayne. The goal of the agreement is to provide those students with an avenue for continuing their education. It is also designed to minimize the loss of credit hours and duplication of coursework, which can frequently occur when transferring.

“We want to offer nonlocal students a convenient way to earn their bachelor’s degree from our university, and this agreement is one way we can achieve this,” said Carl Drummond, vice chancellor for academic affairs and enrollment management at Purdue University Fort Wayne. “Since the requirements of our Bachelor of Applied Science degree can be completed entirely online, traditional barriers to obtaining a Purdue degree are removed for out-of-state students. We are excited to welcome Washtenaw graduates to the Mastodon family.”

Washtenaw students will be able to transfer up to 88 credits toward their bachelor’s degree. They will then be required to complete a minimum of 32 resident credit hours at Purdue Fort Wayne, which can all be earned through online classes. A total of 120 credits is required to graduate.

Students may complete the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) requirements prior to admission to Purdue Fort Wayne. Students who haven’t satisfied the MTA must complete Purdue Fort Wayne’s general education requirements as it applies to transfer students.

“Building this partnership with Purdue Fort Wayne is another way to help students reach their goals,” said Kimberly Hurns, WCC vice president for instruction . “The ability to transfer up to 88 credits from WCC will save students money, and completing a Purdue Fort Wayne bachelor’s degree entirely online simplifies the path to student success.”

This is the second transfer agreement Purdue Fort Wayne has entered into with a Michigan community college. The first agreement, signed last fall, was with Macomb Community College, located in Clinton Township, northeast of Detroit.

Transfer students may begin their classes at Purdue Fort Wayne as early as this semester.
