Anthropology Club Lunchtime Lecture Series Presents: Dr. Deborah Bauer - Black Crusader, American Imperialist, or Malagasy Spy?: John Lewis Waller’s path through 1890s Madagascar
Kettler Hall, Room G46
On May 16, 1891, John Lewis Waller, an African-American attorney living in Kansas, left the United States for his first and last diplomatic posting, to serve as the US foreign consul on the island of Madagascar. Only four years later, Waller was aboard the steamship Djemma, now as a prisoner convicted of espionage, on his way to France to begin his 20-year prison sentence. Dr. Deborah Bauer of the History Department will trace Waller’s trajectory from pre-Civil War slavery through his time in Madagascar, arguing that Waller’s identity as a Black American was central to each success and challenge that he faced in these years.
