Why is international experience critical for psychology and social work students?

As a student pursuing a career in Psychology or Social Work, you are passionate about people, intrigued with what makes people "tick" and understanding the various aspects and influences of culture. Furthermore, you desire to connect with and help people. Your work is important, and will demand skills for inter-cultural and cross-communication, the ability to understand and relate with a diverse population of people.  – globalinksaborad.org

Studying abroad is one of the very best ways you can prepare yourself for your future and give yourself a leg up to enter whichever field you pursue. More than any time in the past, it is critical that students entering such a people-focused field possess a global viewpoint, international experience and understanding of other cultures.

What better way to experience and learn by living and studying in another region of the world? Experience what it is like to be a minority, gain more cultural perspectives, and make a connection with a variety of people from all around the world. Take the chance to develop yourself and your career prospects. If you're taking classes at IPFW about how peoples’ lives and thoughts affect them, imagine how much studying abroad will supplement those courses.  International experience is crucial for professional development.

79% of people in the United States agree that students should have a study abroad experience sometime during college, but only 1% of students from IPFW currently study abroad each year. Do you want to be the top 1%? Study Abroad!

What Others Say from Gooverseas.com:

"Although study abroad is not an integral part of training in psychology, it can provide exposure to a wide variety of quality educational experiences, and, as such, can be very fulfilling." -- Columbia University

Freud was German, Pavlov was Russian, and Piaget was Swiss; there is no shortage of brilliant psychological work being done throughout the world, so why not go study psychology abroad for a semester?!

When should I go?

IPFW students who have completed at least two full-time semesters on a college campus and have at least a 2.5 GPA can apply at any time.  Many students go abroad during their junior year.  Depending on your interests and goals, you may wish to study for an academic year, a semester, or participate in a specialized summer program.  IPFW Psychology faculty recommends that Junior Spring may be a good time to Study Abroad, though with planning, you can be flexible.

What classes can I take?

Students will find a wide variety of courses offered throughout the world.  With planning, students are able to transfer courses back to IPFW to fulfill degree requirements.  Elective classes are often easier to transfer back, but students are still able to fulfill degree requirements abroad.  Some students also choose to take the opportunity to complete an internship to enhance their resume and boost their professional development for a truly unique experience.
