Upgrade to Home Drives

Upgrade Affecting Home (I) Drive

January 16, 2018

IT Services is making a change to all personal network storage/home drives, commonly referred to as the “I drive”. Server moves and content migration will begin Saturday, January 20 at 8:00 am and will end Sunday, January 21 at 5:00 pm.  Your assistance with the following is required for this project to be successful:

  1. Log off your office computer when you leave on Friday, January 19.
  2. Do not add any new or edit any existing files during the upgrade window. You will be able to access existing files during the upgrade.
  3. If you have problems accessing your files on Monday, reboot your computer and log back in, especially if you forget to log out on Friday.
  4. Thoroughly check the content of your I drive after the maintenance to ensure you are not missing any files.

This change is being made to upgrade the servers to improved technology, and as part of an ongoing project to remove Novell products from the campus.

Once the upgrade is complete, you will be able to access your home drive on campus computers running Windows with an automatically mapped drive letter—the I drive for faculty and staff, and the H drive for students.  On campus Macs, you will need to update your settings to connect to the new server.

There is also a new web platform for accessing files from anywhere on any device, available through “My Files” in myIPFW.  Once logged in, you will see your personal storage space which contains all your existing files.  The new My Files supports drag and drop, and mobile access.

Faculty and staff who are accustomed to restoring deleted files using a feature called Salvage, this will be replaced with a similar Windows feature called Previous Versions.

If you are both a student and faculty or staff, you will have two home folders, and can now keep files related to employment and student data separate.

A timeline has not been determined yet, but IT Services is looking forward to eventually migrating our departmental shares (O drives) to this new technology as well.
