Jumpstart 2023
Time: Wednesday, August 16, 2023, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
This workshop is only open to instructors new to Purdue University Fort Wayne.
Jumpstart is a hands-on workshop designed to help instructors prepare for their first week of classes. We will cover university-supported teaching technologies, preparing accessible learner-centered syllabi, effective use of Brightspace to support student learning, and faculty teaching services available. Consultants will be available during work periods to answer questions and help instructors build their course content in Brightspace.

Poll Everywhere Presenters Training
Time: Friday, August 25, 2023, 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
During this one-hour session, the Poll Everywhere Customer Success Manager, Eric Stewart, will explain types of Poll Everywhere activities and demonstrate how to create different activities to engage students in the teaching and learning process. The PFW Ed Tech team representatives will be present to answer Brightspace integration-related questions.

Set Up Your Gradebook in Brightspace

During this session, faculty will learn how to set up their Gradebook in Brightspace. Learn about the major setting differences between Points and Weighted Grades and discuss the pedagogical considerations. A variety of tips will be shared.

Introduction to AI-powered Learning Tools in Higher Education

In this session, participants will explore different types of AI-Powered learning tools in Higher Education. This session focuses on the tools our students have easy access to with no or little cost. At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

Peer Review Training

In this 2-hour synchronous workshop, the Peer Review Team will model a 3-step, evidence-based process for peer reviews of teaching. Attendees will learn strategies for conducting effective peer reviews and have opportunities to apply what they've learned.

Brightspace New Quiz Creation Experience Workshop

Earlier this year, we introduced you to the new look for the Quizzes tool in Brightspace, which streamlines the process for instructors to create quizzes. Join us as we dive into using the Quizzes tool, its' new settings, and answer questions from participants.

Identifying and Supporting Struggling Students

Retention and student success are part of the mission of our university. In this presentation we will review Brightspace tools that you can use to effectively identify at-risk students and ways to easily contact them. We will also present different types of interventions and resources available on campus to help those students.

Surviving The GTA Experience

Holding a teaching assistantship at PFW brings many opportunities and challenges. Often, we wish we could ask someone who has "walked in our shoes." This workshop is devoted to doing just that. We will be gathering wisdom from second-year GTA's using a panel format. Veteran GTA's will be asked a series of questions regarding their experiences teaching while being a also being student themselves.

Amplifying Connection: Empowering Students by Cultivating Self-Efficacy

This workshop will seek to explore the four major sources of self-efficacy; mastery experiences, social modeling, social persuasion, and psychological responses. Those attending will have the opportunity to consider their own assignments and engagement and identify two or three opportunities to impact student self-efficacy.

Cultivate a Community of Motivated Students through Team-Based Learning.
Time: Friday, November 10, 2023, 10:00 am - 11:30 pm
Team-Based Learning (TBL) promotes student motivation through collaboration, transferring the responsibility of learning from the teacher to the students. In TBL, students are organized into small groups working together on real-world problems or case studies that require them to apply course concepts and theories. The main challenge is how to build your course around projects and team activities? I have applied TBL to one of my courses and will share my experience with this transformational process. Participants will “learn-by-doing” as they engage in real TBL exercises and explore the steps needed to structure a TBL course.

Managing Student Empathy, Support, and Well-Being

The Systematic Approach for Adapting the Learning Environment (SAALE) Model (Wood, 2006) is a problem solving approach. According to the SAALE Model, learning occurs when an instructor knows students' present level of performance, recognizes mismatches between how students learn and class learning environments, and adapts classroom learning environments accordingly. Participants will identify their level of preparedness and/or performance and exchange wisdom and practical strategies for better matching learning environments with student performance.

Navigating Power-Dynamics in the Student-Instructor Relationship

Whether we like it or not, power dynamics impact our classrooms. Titles, roles, attitude, and demeanor all contribute to the classroom mix of power. How we engage with this power impacts our learning environment. In this workshop we will explore the seven types of power: legitimate, coercive, reward, expert, referent, information, and connection (French and Raven, 1959), how this power is derived and the impact it may have in our classroom.
