Undergraduate Caps and Gowns

Caps and gowns are to be worn by all undergraduate candidates participating in Commencement.

Colors, Ordering, Key Dates, Pricing, Bookstore Hours, Borrowing


All academic apparel is symbolic and colors are important. 

  • Associate degree candidates wear silver caps and gowns.
  • Bachelor degree candidates wear black caps and gowns.
  • Tassel colors for associate and bachelor degree candidates indicate a candidate's discipline.


  • You will need to know your University (Purdue or IU) and Degree Name to order the correct apparel and tassel. Here's a list (searchable when downloaded.)
  • A limited quantity/range of sizes of gowns will be available in the Bookstore April 18 through May 1.
  • The cost of apparel is payable at the time of order.
  • See sizing details. Extra-large sizes must be special ordered. (Allow extra time for special orders.)
  • All fees are non-refundable.

January 2:  Herff Jones website goes live

April 11:  Expedited Shipping Fee applied to all online orders

April 18:  Last day for online ordering

April 19:  PFW Bookstore In-store purchasing begins

April 28:  Last day for approval of borrowed gowns (required: only gowns worn at previous IPFW ceremonies; full-length selfie emailed to Kelly Shanks at

Bookstore Hours

Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  Spring Break Week:
      Monday through Thursday until 5 p.m.
      Friday until 3 p.m. 

Borrowing a friend's gown from a previous year?

Recycled gowns may be worn if they match this year's style and color. Recycled gowns must be approved in the Office of Academic Ceremonies, Kettler 157, no later than April 28.
