The Changing Professional of Interior Design

  • Today's professional standard requires a four- or five-year degree in interior design, says Terri Maurer, president of the American Society of Interior Designers.
  • Courses cover interior design, art, architecture and technology, construction materials, environmental concerns, business and professional practice. Also required is two year's minimum of post-graduate work experience in the field, followed by passing the interior design qualifying examination monitored by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification.
  • "With more and more states having legislation to regulate either the title 'interior designer' or the practice of interior design, those basic requirements have become the standards," Maurer says. According to the American Society of Interior Designers 22 states and the District of Columbia register of license interior designers. An interior design licensing act is proposed for the State of Indiana. Maurer adds that continuing education "is critical to keep designers current on advances in the professions."
  • Interior designers are eligible for membership in the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), the Institute of Business Designers (IBD), or the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) if they meet the membership requirement, which include professional training, experience, and the passing of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination.
