FORT WAYNE, Indiana—Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry and his wife, Cindy, Purdue University Fort Wayne Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) president Victoria Mills, and Chancellor Ron Elsenbaumer signed an agreement on Friday, February 1, establishing the SALT Endowed Scholarship.

Mayor Henry cosigned the SALT Endowed Scholarship as a guarantor to help raise the money needed for the endowment fund.

“Cindy and I are honored to be part of this important initiative," said Mayor Henry. "This unique effort will highlight how education and athletics can make a positive difference. The City of Fort Wayne values its partnership with Purdue University Fort Wayne as we work together to provide meaningful opportunities that will have a lasting and positive impact on students.”

This marks the first time that an endowed scholarship has been established by a student organization. SALT decided to establish the $25,000 scholarship as part of the Chapman Challenge. SALT agrees to raise two-thirds of the money and then Howard and Betsy Chapman will donate the remaining one-third for the scholarship.

SALT was created in 2003 to promote an overall healthy well-rounded student-athlete experience for all Purdue Fort Wayne student-athletes.  Members of SALT contribute financial support and regularly complete more than 3,000 hours of community service every year.

As a result of the work of SALT, the endowment of the scholarship, and the national and international recognition brought to the university and the City of Fort Wayne through their participation in intercollegiate sports, Mayor Henry also proclaimed Friday, February 1, 2019 as Purdue University Fort Wayne SALT Day in Fort Wayne.

“We are proud of these student-athletes and excited to have Mayor Henry and his wife be a big part of this scholarship” said Chancellor Ron Elsenbaumer. “Then to have the Mayor proclaim today as Purdue University Fort Wayne SALT Day in Fort Wayne was a wonderful surprise addition to a wonderful day here at the university.”

To be eligible for the SALT Endowed Scholarship, candidates must have completed one year of athletic eligibility at Purdue University Fort Wayne and be in good standing within NCAA rules. Preference will be given to student-athletes not already on a full athletic scholarship with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and involved in the Fort Wayne Community.
