Purdue University Fort Wayne Unveils New Athletics Logo and Identity

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Purdue University Fort Wayne announced at a news conference this afternoon that all of its NCAA sports teams will be known as Purdue Fort Wayne beginning July 1, 2018, in coordination with the official realignment and rebranding of the university to Purdue University Fort Wayne.

The beloved Mastodon will continue as the mascot, and all men’s and women’s sports teams will now be referred to as the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons.

“Our alumni, fans, student-athletes, coaches, and staff have been eagerly awaiting this moment,” says Kelley Hartley Hutton, director of athletics. “The new branding includes all that we had all hoped for—and so much more. We will all be so proud to see our student-athletes suited up in their new uniforms this fall.”

Purdue Fort Wayne’s branding partner, SME, worked closely with the university’s leadership team to develop the athletics logo and identity. Based in New York, SME specializes in higher education marketing and branding. They have significant experience in both collegiate and professional sports marketing and have produced work for the NCAA, NFL, and NBA.

“This is an exciting day for our university, for our student-athletes, and for Mastodons around the world,” says Ronald L. Elsenbaumer, chancellor of Purdue University Fort Wayne. “Incorporating the internationally known Purdue name prominently into our athletics branding will add prestige and recognition to an already stellar athletics program.”

In addition to the announcement of the new name, the official logo for athletics was unveiled. The gradual process of changing logos and branding on campus has already begun, with the new logo being revealed today at center court in the Gates Center. The Mastodon Athletics website has also been updated with the new logo and branding.

The new athletics logo includes three important elements that are immensely popular with alumni and a passionate fan base—elements that are central to the university’s longstanding tradition in athletics. The Mastodon, Tusky, is the focal point of the new logo, “Fort Wayne” is incorporated prominently into the name, and the color blue has been incorporated as a secondary color to the university’s official school colors of gold and black.
