Inclusive Restrooms
In November 2018, to bring awareness to trans and nonbinary issues, The Resource Center placed mirror clamps on every bathroom mirror through the campus to inform the community about the policies and protections at Purdue Fort Wayne. The bathroom clamp statement reads: Purdue University Fort Wayne protects the rights of all persons without regard to sex, gender identity, gender expression, or genetic information. Therefore, all members of our community are free to use a restroom that aligns with their gender identity.
If you would like extra mirror clamps for restrooms near your office, email resourcecenter@pfw.edu and we can send some to your office via campus mail.

Safe Zone Workshops
Safe Zone for Staff and Faculty workshops have undergone some changes as the program has transferred departments during the Winter 2019 recess. For Spring 2020 semester, we will have the 4 hour workshop and certification, roundtables for additional discussions, and 1-hour trainings.
4-hour workshop: Includes information on LGBTQ+ history, terms, symbols, being an ally, trans and gender non-conforming identities, and an interactive activity
Roundtable: A time of questions and open discussion, meant for those who’ve previously attended a workshop as a refresher to talk about the LGBTQ+ community and issues surrounding it.
1-hour training: The basics on how to be an ally to LGBTQ+ students, staff, and faculty

Pronouns
Gender pronouns are words that refer to someone that is being talked about. He/him/his, she/her/hers, and they/them/theirs are 3 common examples of gender pronouns. It is good practice to ask your students to share their pronouns when doing attendance on the first day of class. Check here for more info.
Gender neutral pronouns are words that don't specify if the subject of the sentence is a man or a woman. Gender neutral pronouns include they, everyone, this person, ze, etc. And yes, they can be used as a singular pronoun: look here. Check here for more info.
Why pronouns matter?
Misgendering is the experience of being labeled by others as a gender other than the one that a person identifies with. For example, your new coworker Alicia tells you that her pronouns are she/her. Throughout the day, you refer to Alicia as he/him to your other coworkers.
Read about why using correct gender pronouns and chosen names is important.
Names
Names Matter!
Deadnaming occurs when someone refers to a person who's transgender by the name they used before they transitioned. You may also hear it described as referring to someone by their "birth name" or their "given name." Click here for more info.
