Reaffirmation of University Face Mask Policy

Beginning Tuesday, in accordance with Governor Holcomb’s Executive Order 21-09, Indiana’s face mask mandate will change to a strong recommendation that individuals continue to wear face masks when in “public locations” around the state. Purdue University Fort Wayne reaffirms that its current face mask policy will remain in effect until further notice. All students, staff, faculty, and campus visitors must wear a face mask when in university buildings and outdoors when social distancing is not possible.
All current public health guidance, including that from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Indiana Department of Health, the American College Health Association, and Purdue University at West Lafayette, agrees that wearing a face mask—along with good hand hygiene and social distancing—is a simple and effective step to help curb the spread of COVID-19 on campus and throughout the community.
COVID-19 case counts in Allen County are significantly lower than they were a few months ago but are currently on the rise. The rapidly expanding availability of safe, effective, and free COVID-19 vaccines affords a pathway to easing face mask and other health and safety protocols, but not until all members of the university community have had a reasonable opportunity to be fully vaccinated. Eligibility to receive the COVID-19 vaccine opened up to those age 16 and older last week. Many in the 16 to 39 age range are still awaiting their first dose.
With the end of the semester quickly approaching, all members of the campus community must remain vigilant and do everything in their power to keep themselves and others safe and healthy.
