Eastern Cottonwood
Description
One of the largest trees of the Indiana forests, Eastern Cottonwood can be extremely fast-growing under favorable conditions. It typically grows on low ground near streams, but can be used in revegetation of strip mine areas. The `cotton’ which fills the air along rivers in late spring acts to disperse the seeds. Leaf stems, or petioles, are flattened as with Quaking and Bigtooth Aspen.
