About Us

In November 2011 the Purdue University Fort Wayne Learning Commons was opened on the second floor of the library. The campus Learning Commons is a student-centered academic space, a significant physical and virtual learning space outside the classroom. The Learning Commons partners of the Writing Center, librarians and staff, IT services computing, Studio M, Purdue University Fort Wayne student government, IPSGA, and student workers are working together to assure student, faculty and staff convenient access to human, electronic and print resources.

IPSGA has been a consistent and generous supporter of the Learning Commons. The student representatives on the Learning Commons Council provide input into the needs and design of the Learning Commons. Initially, IPSGA funding was used to purchase soft furniture that was chosen by students during a "Sit-on-It" campaign where samples of chairs, ottomans, sofas and tables were available for students to test. More recently, IPSGA has purchased laptops to be loaned and purchased comfortable and moveable tables and chairs for the Learning Commons. IPSGA weekly Monday Senate meetings (open to all) are held in the Learning Commons.

The Learning Commons space has become a hub of academic activity from group study to a venue for academic events, such as Featured Faculty Lecture Series, Undergraduate History Conference, in addition to the IPSGA Senate meetings. In spring 2013 the Learning Commons hosted the first Student Research and Creative Endeavor Poster Symposium which filled the second floor and impressed faculty, students, and guests alike.

The Learning Commons Council works with students, faculty and administration to fulfill the vision, mission, and strategic goals for the Learning Commons:

  • Create an environment that is flexible, open, empowering, comfortable, inviting and conducive to study and research.
  • Facilitate collaborative learning through group study rooms, group workstations, and open spaces to accommodate a variety of group needs.
  • Provide access to library, writing, and technology professionals to facilitate and encourage the creation of new scholarship.
  • Encourage the sharing of scholarship by students, faculty, and staff.
  • Partner with others whose missions are to facilitate the learning, research and service objectives of the University.

See you in the Learning Commons!
