Computer Science Student Research

The PFW Computer Science department promotes and offers a range of research opportunities to students. Students participate in scholarly activities by working at research laboratories, completing the senior capstone, and engaging in student-driven entrepreneurship and innovation projects. The CS department has a PFW Center of Excellence and six research laboratories lead by the CS faculty members.

Information Analytics and Visualization (IAV) Center

The Information Analytics and Visualization (IAV) Center is one of the University’s Centers of Excellence. It opened on February 23, 2011 with a $500,000 grant awarded from the Lilly Endowment Inc. The center serves as a valuable resource for northeast Indiana that strives to support excellence in teaching and learning at Purdue Fort Wayne while contributing to the development of the region through research and innovative endeavors. The IAV Center conducts research in the areas of information visualization, big data analytics, and virtual reality, and also provides state-of-the-art resources for faculty and students to engage in multidisciplinary research and develops collaborative projects with regional industry and other research institutions. IoT & Intelligent Systems Lab integrates Internet and cloud computing, AI and Machine Learning, data mining, and cyber security technologies to research and develop intelligent and secure systems. Business Intelligence and Information Management Lab (BI+IM). A collaborative space for teaching, research, and industry-funded experiential learning projects in 1) BI: The strategies and technologies used by organizations for data analysis and decision making, 2) IM: The acquisition, custodianship, and distribution and information. seCure, Heterogenous & Effective Network Lab

CHEN (seCure, Heterogeneous, and Effective Networks) Lab researches epidemic process in complex networks such as social networks and applies the technologies of Internet of things to various applications such as a smart home and space exploration. Click here for more information

SURGE VR (Simulation User Research / Game Experience VR) Lab

SURGE VR (Simulation User Research / Game Experience VR) Lab is an interdisciplinary lab focused on developing and evaluating user experiences in games, simulations, and virtual experiences. The lab is guided by a holistic framework that looks at the effectiveness, efficiency, and application of game and VR software. Projects are both designed and evaluated across disciplines. Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Lab

Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Lab engages students in practical and theoretical Artificial Intelligence and Artificial General Intelligence research using robots as research platforms and tools. Current projects including simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) research with an irobot Create 2 and research in attaching artificial reasoners to human-like robots, such as the Naobot.
