Jim Williams was raised in Western Massachusetts, and, after receiving his A.S. degree in Nursing from Springfield College, he moved to New York City in 1984.  While there, he worked full time as a Registered Nurse at the Burn Center at The New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center, and earned his B.A. in English/Secondary Education Minor from Hunter College.

In 1995, he received a Graduate Council Fellowship to attend University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa in order to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Book Arts.

In 1998, Jim moved to Jonesboro, Arkansas and worked as Crisis Intervention Coordinator at a Community Mental Health Center.  He did one-on one crisis interventions in seven counties, and eventually developed and managed an inpatient Crisis Intervention Unit, and a Forensic Unit in Jonesboro in response to inadequate services in the state.

In 2007, he moved to Fort Wayne Indiana, and opened a Studio and Gallery on Calhoun Street, and began teaching at IPFW.

Jim published illustrations and graphic designs in various magazines and posters while living in New York.  He has shown at the Paper Arts Museum in Atlanta, GA.  He published several chapbooks and broadsides, which are now part of a permanent collection at The Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library in Tuscaloosa.   In Jonesboro, he regularly exhibited at the Sara Howell Gallery. In Fort Wayne he participated in group and solo exhibits, and curated shows at his own gallery in Fort Wayne.  He has also participated in multiple shows at ArtLink Fort Wayne, and received the 2011 AVA Award for Graphic Design.
