Architectural Design Wins Merit Award

The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center

Fort Wayne-based SchenkelShultz Architecture and Brenner Design of Indianapolis have won a merit award for interior design for their design of the John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center. The award was given by American Institute of Architects (AIA) as part of an annual design competition. AIA’s panel of judges described the interior of  Rhinehart as elegant simplicity.

The IPFW John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center was designed to serve the university and the community. Visually exciting, the building was created with glass-prismed piano studios, a conference room and lobbies that provide exquisite space for learning and interaction, with panoramic views of the IPFW Arts Plaza and the heart of the campus. It features a 250-seat recital hall, classrooms, studios, administrative offices and a 1,500-seat auditorium.

The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center

The School of Music is housed in the beautiful John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center on the north end of the PFW campus, adjacent to Williams Theatre and the Visual Arts Building. Opening its doors in the fall of 2007, this 110,000 square feet facility is home to more than 150 music majors and a number of community arts groups.

Rhinehart Music Center (RMC) features a spectacular and acoustically gratifying 1500-seat auditorium and an acoustically superb 250-seat recital hall. RMC has 25 practice rooms (some “over-sized” to accommodate grand pianos, multiple pianos, percussion equipment or small ensemble rehearsals), 24 faculty studios, two general classrooms, one music education classroom which simulates an elementary school music classroom, a music technology lab, a piano lab, two rehearsal halls, a large and visually appealing conference room, a small conference room, a three-office administrative suite, a faculty workroom and an office suite for independent community arts organizations. There is a recording studio which is linked to both performance spaces, both rehearsal halls and to four practice rooms. The building is exceptionally functional with exceptional sound isolation.
