COAS Alumni Benefits

Alumni Center

Did you know that alumni from the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) can use many professional services on campus? And receive discounts at local businesses? Or have you heard about the new program designed to help alumni promote their businesses? IPFW’s alumni relations office offers many perks, but too few of our 10,000 COAS alumni take advantage of the discounts and services available to them as IPFW graduates.  So, what are these perks that too many alumni are missing out on?

IPFW Alumni Association Membership

Paid membership to the IPFW Alumni Association comes with extra benefits. New members receive membership gifts at alumni signature events. Perks for members also include a 20% discount at Follett's IPFW bookstore, 15% discount on men’s basketball season tickets, and a discount at the IPFW Athletics Center. According to Assistant Director of Membership and Affinity Christopher Riley, alumni relations is also “in the process of enhancing and growing our local membership benefits” from IPFW alumni-owned businesses (see Think. Buy. IPFW Alumni below).

IPFW Alumni Association members' children, stepchildren, or partners are also eligible for a $1,000 scholarship to IPFW or the university (IU or Purdue) that their degree was issued through. For scholarship details, see here.

Also, our graduates receive dual alumni association membership. When IPFW graduates join either the IU or Purdue alumni association, they automatically receive an IPFW alumni association membership. The membership costs $50 per year. See the alumni website for more information.

“Think. Buy. IPFW Alumni” Initiative

The recent trend in "buy local" campaigns is the inspiration for IPFW's “Think. Buy. IPFW Alumni.” Alumni relations is compiling a list of alumni-owned businesses, which they provide on their website, to provide networking and promotion for our alumni. This program promotes any alumni owned or run business in Fort Wayne and the surrounding areas.

As Director of Alumni Relations Debra Boggs explains, “This is a way for us to get the word out about alumni businesses in town. To get our community to frequent their establishments and develop good partnerships with them. For our events, we’ve used the alumni-owned Old Crown for bartending. It’s not just a name on a list, they really are alumni partners.”

Alumni Center Rentals

All alumni can rent the Steel Dynamics Keith E. Busse IPFW Alumni Center atAlumni Center a 50% discount. The grand lobby/bar, meeting rooms, and patio are available for events. The building has a space for bartenders and caterers. Alumni have rented the space for business retreats, bridal or baby showers, and even weddings. The conference room in the center is also available for use by alumni free of charge. See Office of Special Events website for more details.

Career Services

IPFW’s Career Services office provides professional development and career opportunities for COAS alumni. Alumni can set up a one-hour appointment to discuss resume writing, career changes, interviewing strategies, job searching, or help exploring graduate schools with a career advisor. Alumni can also take advantage of JobZone, a free Web-based system used by IPFW to post job opportunities. Contact career services or alumni relations for more details.

Special Alumni Events

Alumni relations holds several signature events throughout the year. One of the most popular events is the annual Mastodon Roast, at which all IPFW graduates can enjoy the hog roast, music, networking opportunities, and children’s activities. Alumni relations also sponsors alumni nights at events such as TinCaps baseball and IPFW men's basketball games to name a few.

Boggs and Riley are currently developing college-specific networking events that will include faculty, students, and alumni. A pilot event with the Dormer School of Business was held in December 2014. So be on the look-out for other events, activities, and services, especially any networking opportunities, because according to Boggs, the goal is “to be wildly useful to our alumni.”
