Research interests
My research is ethnographic and archival and focuses on mixed-status Latino families who have experienced both the child protective services system and immigration enforcement systems in the United States. My most recent project focused on a Memorandum of Understanding between the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and the Mexican Consulate in Chicago, which obliges DCFS to consider placing Mexican or Mexican-American wards in Mexico with their relatives or deported parents. I am interested in how DCFS and their transnational institutional partners make decisions about whether or not transnational placements are in their wards’ “best interests.” I am also interested in the experiences of Latino families who must navigate these institutions in their pursuit of family reunification.
