How helpful and supportive are your parents? How about your professors? Is there such a thing as being “too helpful?” Could allowing a child or a student to fail ever be a “good thing?” Lesa Rae Vartanian will share her work on “helicopter parenting”—a style of parenting characterized by high investment, high involvement, and a seeming desire to protect children from negative outcomes. To what extent is this a desirable approach to the parental role? Are educators beginning to adopt similar approaches? These questions and others will be explored and discussed.
