College of Professional Studies

As an education major you will spend many hours in schools before student teaching, which is a strength of our program.

If you are pursuing a teaching degree or licensure, you are required to participate in the prescribed field experience program. Field experience courses must be taken as shown in the degree requirements.

In the field experience program, you are introduced to teaching, educational concerns, goal setting, and professionalism. This distinctive program provides an organized series of courses designed to integrate all professional education courses with field experiences. The program allows you repeated opportunities to participate with teachers/pupils in classrooms.

Students intending to complete a field experience must have a Safe Hiring Solutions criminal history background report (aka CHR) that will be current through the entire semester prior to starting the experience.  Purdue University Fort Wayne and each school reserve the right to deny placements based on the contents of the report.  A report must be renewed every year (preferably during the summer to avoid long delays in getting them processed).

Early Childhood Education(ECE) MAJORS AND DUAL MAJORS:  If you are an ECE major or dual major who is being placed in a Head Start setting, you must follow these instructions on how to obtain the National Criminal History Check through FSSA for an early childhood setting. For a field experience in a public/private P-12 school district, click on the criminal history background report link above and follow the instructions.

Don’t forget to print, fill out, and sign a Criminal History Release Form too. Return the release form to the SSC office in NF #243.  If you have previously completed a release form, you don’t need to do another one.  If you are not sure, contact the SSC office and ask if they have one on file.  Everyone will need to have a release form on file. This form gives the Purdue University- Fort Wayne College of Professional Studies permission to use, copy, and send your Criminal History Background report to the schools or agencies where you are being placed for a field experience, practicum, or student teaching.

NOTE:  Medical exams, tests, or any other documents (other than a CHR or release form) required for your Early Childhood program are to be turned in directly to the professor of your course - not the CPS Student Success Center.
