Ezel Smith Diversity Scholarship

Two years ago, many of us attended a party honoring Ezel Smith, who retired after 53 years of service to IPFW - a record that few, if any, of us are likely to achieve. At the party, Ezel handed me a check - her personal contribution to the Ezel Smith Diversity Scholarship Fund. This generosity on the part of a woman of very modest means struck me as an example for us all - just as Ezel's strong work ethic and unfailing cheerfulness inspired us to name the scholarship after her.

The scholarship has been designated for Summer Bridge students - economically disadvantaged and educationally at-risk recent high school graduates who enroll for an intensive summer program of six credits with supplemental instruction, tutoring, and a residential experience. Students who complete the summer courses with a GPA of at least 3.0 and who enroll at IPFW for the fall semester will be eligible for the scholarship. If no Summer Bridge student qualifies based on these criteria, eligibility will be extended to any student who has contributed to enhancing the campus climate for diversity.

As of October 31, 2005 there was $14,277.42 in the fund. However, $25,000 is needed to establish the endowment. The endowment must be there before scholarships can be awarded.

Please consider a gift to this fund in support of students who, like Ezel Smith, have overcome many disadvantages in order to succeed.

Contributions are eligible for a State of Indiana tax credit, that is, part of your gift comes back to you, up to a maximum of $100 for individuals or $200 for couples filing a joint return. The donation is also deductible from your federal taxes if you itemize your return.

To contribute, contact the IPFW Development Office at 260-481-6962. The Development Office is located in KT 140.
