The courses you take in ways of knowing will help you focus on your interests and passions when it comes to your academic development. You can choose from four variations we have available.
Scientific Ways of Knowing
The scientific ways of knowing will help you better understand the scientific process. You will be able to observe experiments and make inferences as to what happened; see how natural science theories are formed, tested, and validated; and find the limitations all scientists face with scientific inquiry.
Social and Behavioral Ways of Knowing
In choosing this way of knowing, you will learn to navigate the nature and diversity of individuals, cultures, and societies around the world. You will explore behavioral, societal, and cultural processes using the scientific method to gain a better understanding. This understanding of other cultures will assist you in having the willingness, confidence, and sense of responsibility for making informed decisions. It will help you acquire the ability to assess your personal behavior and that of others. To fully apply this information, you will need to have a:
- Historical consciousness
- Familiarity with components of social structure and social institutions
- Knowledge of basic behavioral processes
- Comprehension of the interplay among ideas, technology, and social organization, and
- Appreciation of the complex dimensions of personal and institutional rules.
Humanistic and Artistic Ways of Knowing
When studying humanistic thought, you will attempt to resolve issues such as the meaning of life, the role of the arts in our understanding of what it is to be human, and the limits of knowledge. With humanistic inquiry, you will assess across temporal, cultural, disciplinary, and theoretical divisions. You will find how humans view themselves in relation to other humans, nature, and the divine. Studies in the humanities offer you the opportunity to develop mature self-concepts and heightened social consciousness.
Interdisciplinary or Creative Ways of Knowing
Studying the interdisciplinary ways of knowing will allow you to not have a narrow and deep understanding of one subject matter, but can give you a broad experience of life and the world around us. This allows for a rounded education and for you to focus on taking the classes you are interested in.
